International training course in the framework of youth program in Italy, Florence

Cross-border training course "New Roads in Promoting Cross-Border Volunteering" within the framework of the EU programme "Youth in Action" took place in Florence neighborhood (Impruneta) in Italy from 18th to 26th of October, 2011. The training was attended by thirty different European countries representatives from Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Turkey, Great Britain, Poland and the Baltic countries Latvia and Estonia. Latvia was represented by the Foundation public relations specialist Iluta Ieviņa and two volunteers of the Foundation - Alise Salmiņa and Niklāvs Matusevičs.

The project's main objective was to find new ways of cross-border volunteering in Europe for the active people of the non-governmental organizations engaged or planning to engage in volunteers' exchange programs, development of competence in intercultural project planning, project implementation and evaluation.

Keywords that describe the entire period of training may include: intercultural competence, identity, values, non-formal teaching methods, creativity, volunteer work and project planning stages. Many non-formal learning methods were used in the training process, such as group work, discussions, creative tasks, games, etc.. Each activity made participants engage and think along.

The presentations of each country organizations took place in the evenings. In warm atmosphere we could get acquainted with other countries representatives and learn about the organizations, countries, cities, and traditions they represented.

Participation in this project gave the opportunity to obtain valuable information about voluntary organizations, to meet face to face with volunteers from different countries (as well as from Latvia) working in Italy, as well as to familiarize with the Italian lifestyle and culture, find new contacts for possible future cooperation.
